What is an Alpha Reader?
An Alpha Reader is a reader who gives feedback on an author unfinished manuscripts. It can be feedback on plot, tempo, proofreading, characters, storyline, theme and more. The author guides you through the process and asks questions that you give feedback on. It's very simple.
An Alpha Readers is someone who is enthusiastic about reading the author's books specifically and are fond of the genre the author writes in. They read books in the genre regularly.
Do you have to know lots of writing techniques and understand how authors work?
Not at all! By reading books regularly you have subconsciously picked up on what feels natural on the page. It's your instinctual feedback as a reader that is helpful.
The writer has the full story in their head, which means they often miss important information that will be obvious to you as a reader.
It's basically like playing "find what's missing" or "find what doesn't belong" in a manuscript.
However, you need to safeguard the copyright of the author and be a genuine team-member.
What is a Beta Reader?
A Beta Reader is a reader who gives feedback on a finished manuscript, where the story and scenes are done, but their might be small errors in the text.
They give feedback on the whole manuscript, reading it from start to finish to catch over-arching plot-holes, find faults with the tempo of the chapters and story arch. They are great at finding frustration points in the manuscript. For example when the story feels like it slows down or when the reader feels overwhelmed with information or confused about a poorly explained concept in the book.
Do you have to know lots of writing techniques and understand how authors work?
Not at all! By reading books regularly you have subconsciously picked up on what feels natural on the page.
However, you do need to read the full book and give feedback along the way. And you need to have experience reading in the specific genres the book adheres to to make sure it fits those readers.
And you need to safeguard the copyright of the author and be a genuine team-member.
What is an ARC Reader?
An 'ARC' is an Advance Review Copy of an unpublished version of a book that is sent to select readers for review on official websites like Amazon, Goodreads, YouTube, Instagram, Tiktok to help readers decide if it matches their taste and if to buy it when published.
All early reviews help sell books. Their purpose is to guide readers to find books they might enjoy. It can also encourage readers to take a chance on a new author they haven't read before.
Do you need to have a large following or be a professional reviewer?
Not at all! You just have to be excited to read Winter Arnwood's books!
Any and all reviews are helpful to readers, and the more diverse the reviewers are, the more readers can get different perspectives.
However, you do need to have a Goodreads account and have posted at least two reviews of other books to ensure you're actually willing to do the work of posting the review.
